Medieval garlic and bile potion kills MRSA superbug - CBS News

Medieval garlic and bile potion kills MRSA superbug

Could a 1,000-year-old concoction be the answer to stopping superbugs?

Christina Lee, an Anglo-Saxon expert at the University of Nottingham, found the recipe for a remedy for eye infections in a 10th Century medical volume called Bald's Leechbook, one of the earliest known medical textbooks. The instructions were clear -- clear enough to follow today -- so she brought it to a microbiology lab at the university to see if it really works against bacteria.

In its original Old English, the recipe -- which may date back even further, to the 9th Century -- called for two species of Allium (garlic and onion or leek), wine and bile from a cow's stomach. The topical potion was brewed in a brass vessel, strained and left to sit for nine days.

The ingredients on their own are known to have antibacterial properties, so it seemed like a good bet.

"We thought that Bald's eyesalve might show a small amount of antibiotic activity, because each of the ingredients has been shown by other researchers to have some effect on bacteria in the lab," said microbiologist Freya Harrison. "Copper and bile salts can kill bacteria, and the garlic family of plants make chemicals that interfere with the bacteria's ability to damage infected tissues."

When they performed their tests, they "were absolutely blown away by just how effective the combination of ingredients was."

They used fresh ingredients according to the original instructions and exposed populations of Staphylococcus aureaus, the antibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA, to the potion both in lab cultures and on infected wounds in mice. It obliterated the MRSA, killing 999 out of 1,000 bacterial cells.

"We were genuinely astonished at the results of our experiments in the lab. We believe modern research into disease can benefit from past responses and knowledge, which is largely contained in non-scientific writings," said Lee, adding that remedies like this one "were developed well before the modern understanding of germ theory."

Steve Diggle of the microbiology lab pointed out that this was also before the invention of the scientific method of carefully planned experimentation.

"When we built this recipe in the lab I didn't really expect it to actually do anything," he said. "When we found that it could actually disrupt and kill cells in S. aureus biofilms, I was genuinely amazed. Biofilms are naturally antibiotic resistant and difficult to treat so this was a great result."

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem around the world. Repeated exposure to antibiotics can lead germs to develop resistance to the drugs, making these life-saving treatments no longer effective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that drug-resistant bacteria cause 23,000 deaths and 2 million illnesses each year in the United States alone.

MRSA -- methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus -- is a major problem in hospitals, where it can lead to life-threatening pneumonia and bloodstream infections. There were two superbug outbreaks at Los Angeles hospitals this year, linked to a medical device called a duodenoscope. New research finds the superbug is now taking up residence in American homes.

Last week, the White House announced a five-year plan to fight the danger posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

"The rise of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria and the lack of new antimicrobials in the developmental pipeline are key challenges for human health," said Harrison. "There is a pressing need to develop new strategies against pathogens because the cost of developing new antibiotics is high and eventual resistance is likely."

The multidisciplinary "AncientBiotics" team will present their findings this week at the annual meeting of the Society for General Microbiology. They plan to keep exploring the future potential of potions from the past.

WALDEN by Henry David Thoreau - FULL AudioBook - Part 1 (of 2) | Greatest Audio Books
WALDEN by Henry David Thoreau - FULL Audio Book - Part 1 (of 2) - - Walden by Henry David Thoreau is one of the best-known non-fiction books written by an American. Published in 1854, it details Thoreau's life for two years, two months, and two days around the shores of Walden Pond. Walden is neither a novel nor a true autobiography, but a social critique of the Western World, with each chapter heralding some aspect of humanity that needed to be either renounced or praised. Along with his critique of the civilized world, Thoreau examines other issues afflicting man in society, ranging from economy and reading to solitude and higher laws. He also takes time to talk about the experience at Walden Pond itself, commenting on the animals and the way people treated him for living there, using those experiences to bring out his philosophical positions. This extended commentary on nature has often been interpreted as a strong statement to the natural religion that transcendentalists like Thoreau and Emerson were preaching. Authentic Russian Sauna, Turkish Hamam & Finnish Steam room in Mississauga | South-Western Bathhouse

Facilities

Sauna MississaugaRussian Banya

Being true to our Russian heritage, we made sure to create an authentic Banya. Built from cedar, this Banya offers four levels of heat, depending on where you sit. The benches are wide enough to comfortably lie down, which is ideal for a good steam.
A beautiful brick stove produces heat and humidity. The classic temperature for a Banya is 60°C with 60% humidity. You can adjust the temperature by throwing water into the stove. The water quickly evaporates as it hits the hot stones inside. These stones are traditionally granite or basalt, gathered from lakeshores; they are known as "wild." The fire is fed with hard wood. We use apple, birch, oak and cherry as they produce the nicest aroma and quality of heat!

History

The Banya is an integral part of Russian culture. Its presence has been documented as far back as 945 AD. The Banya would be used in marital ceremonies and health rituals, but now it mostly serves as a popular place for socialization, drinking, feasting and relaxation.

Fun Stuff

During our trip to Rome, we acquired an original brick from The Baths of Trajan. This was a massive bathing and leisure complex built in 104AD by Emperor Trajan. These thermae (from Greek thermos, meaning "hot") were used as a recreational and social center by both male and female Roman citizens. We are proud to have a little piece of Roman Baths history in our own sauna!

Turkish Hamam

Adorned with mosaic tiles, our Hamam is a pleasure to steam in. A serene, backlit pool of water provides a source of light and refreshment for when the thick steam envelops your body. The ceiling is arched and the seats remain cool for your comfort.

History

This style of steam room was adopted by the Ottoman Turks after their conquest of Byzantium. The Hamam is basically an improved version of the Roman baths!

Fun Stuff

The vase and decorative tiles displayed in our  steam room were found during our trip to Istanbul, a center for Hamams and historical jewel for the steaming culture. So enjoy your steam with a little culture at your fingertips!

Finnish Sauna

Our Finnish Sauna is built of pine with cedar benches and uses an electric system of heating. It is a dry, high heat sauna and water is not used inside. Whether you like a wet steam or a dry steam is based on preference, so be sure to try this alternate style!

History

The Finnish Sauna shares a close history with the Russian Banya. Many make a distinction between the two due to the Sauna being dry and the Banya being wet. This is not necessarily law as both have varied their styles throughout history, but is commonly the case.

Tea Room

Our tea room is a place to rehydrate, try authentic Russian foods or simply relax. It has beautiful high ceilings and is decorated in the Tudor style. The atmosphere is homey and the walls are adorned with antique samovars and teapots that make one feel as though they are in Russia herself.

Banya, the Russian Rite of Steam Bath :: Manners, Customs and Traditions :: Culture & Arts :: Russia-InfoCentre

Banya, the Russian Rite of Steam Bath :: Manners, Customs and Traditions :: Culture & Arts :: Russia-InfoCentre

Banya is one of the most ancient traditions of the Russian people. Russian steam bath is a full-fledged philosophy, as well as invigorative pleasure compared to nothing and true relief for one's soul.

Traditionally, Russian steam bath is a log hut with three rooms, namely entrance room (called predbannik), washing room and steam room (parilka). The peculiarity of the true Russian steam bath is comparatively not high temperature, from 45 to 60 degrees centigrade and high relative humidity, 90 to 100 percent, which, according to the modern studies, provides better vaporization and more penetrating heating.

Steam bath was popular among the Slavs as far back as the 5-6th cc already. Everyone, be it princes, noblemen or common folks, resorted to this hygienic invigorative delight. Apart from its practical purposes, banya played a great role in various rites. For example, it was considered necessary to go to banya before a wedding ceremony and the day after it, the visit being accompanied with a special ceremony.

Many foreign travelers wrote about the Russian banya. The German scholar Oleary who traveled in Muscovy and Persia in 1633—1639, wrote, that the Russians stuck to the custom of washing in a steam bath. "The Russians can bear unbearable heat, which makes them all red and frizzled so much that they cannot stay in the bathhouse any longer and rush naked outdoors, men and women alike, and pour themselves with cold water, or, in winter, wallow in snow, rub their body with it, as if it were soap, and then return to the sweating-room" – the German scholar accounted. He also mentioned, by the way, that the Russians disclosed the False Dmitry was a foreigner and imposter because he disliked steam baths.

What banya is made of

The outside walls of the Russian steam bath house are, as a rule, built of round logs or square beams. It is known that fir tree or pine tree make the best material for building a bathhouse. The special zest of Russian banya is in the traditional stone stove. Its construction is universal and allows not only heating through the bath, but also heating water and vaporizing the room with the help of water, splashed onto its hot stones. It is impossible to imagine a Russian banya without a proper stone stove.

Types of Russian banya

There are two major types of Russian banya: heated black (po-chornomu) and white (po-belomu). The 'black' banya is the oldest invention, and less convenient than the 'white' one. It has no flue, and so the smoke goes out just through a whole in the ceiling and makes the walls black with soot. The 'white' banya is of a perfected construction, letting the smoke out through a flue and the stove heated from the entrance room.

The most exotic are, of course, the banyas right inside a big stone stove. The stove is heated, and so is water in big iron pots; afterwards the coals are shoveled into one corner of the stove, the 'floor' of the stove is covered with straw and banya is ready: you can get inside the stove and wash yourself, and even splash yourself carefully with a venik.

What is Venik?

From the days of hoary antiquity the Slavs whipped themselves and their fellows in banya with bunches of dried branches of birch, oak, maple, or other plants. Strangely enough, the barbarian custom remains popular till date, probably because nothing can be compared to its reviving effect. Flogging with venik (a bunch of leafy branches) is a peculiar massage, increasing blood circulation, sweating and metabolism and cleansing the whole organism. The ether oils in venik leaves improve the condition of skin and produce anti-ageing effect, the fact known from ancient times. As the folks used to say: "You do not grow old on that day, when you steam in banya".

How to take it?

If you are now inspired enough to go to the Russian banya, keep in mind that the best precepts are gradation and moderation (though the natives will probably forget about the latter, as usual). If you are eager to get the unforgettable sensation of bathing in snow or ice-cold water after parilka, do not forget to heat yourself very well with venik before and after this feat of spirit.

Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Self-Reliance

from Essays: First Series (1841)

Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Ne te quaesiveris extra."

"Man is his own star; and the soul that can
Render an honest and a perfect man,
Commands all light, all influence, all fate;
Nothing to him falls early or too late.
Our acts our angels are, or good or ill,
Our fatal shadows that walk by us still."
Epilogue to Beaumont and Fletcher's Honest Man's Fortune

Cast the bantling on the rocks,
Suckle him with the she-wolf's teat;
Wintered with the hawk and fox,
Power and speed be hands and feet.

ESSAY II Self-Reliance

I read the other day some verses written by an eminent painter which were original and not conventional. The soul always hears an admonition in such lines, let the subject be what it may. The sentiment they instil is of more value than any thought they may contain. To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, — that is genius. Speak your latent conviction, and it shall be the universal sense; for the inmost in due time becomes the outmost,—— and our first thought is rendered back to us by the trumpets of the Last Judgment. Familiar as the voice of the mind is to each, the highest merit we ascribe to Moses, Plato, and Milton is, that they set at naught books and traditions, and spoke not what men but what they thought. A man should learn to detect and watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more than the lustre of the firmament of bards and sages. Yet he dismisses without notice his thought, because it is his. In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts: they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty. Great works of art have no more affecting lesson for us than this. They teach us to abide by our spontaneous impression with good-humored inflexibility then most when the whole cry of voices is on the other side. Else, to-morrow a stranger will say with masterly good sense precisely what we have thought and felt all the time, and we shall be forced to take with shame our own opinion from another.

There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried. Not for nothing one face, one character, one fact, makes much impression on him, and another none. This sculpture in the memory is not without preestablished harmony. The eye was placed where one ray should fall, that it might testify of that particular ray. We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents. It may be safely trusted as proportionate and of good issues, so it be faithfully imparted, but God will not have his work made manifest by cowards. A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace. It is a deliverance which does not deliver. In the attempt his genius deserts him; no muse befriends; no invention, no hope.

Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine providence has found for you, the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events. Great men have always done so, and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age, betraying their perception that the absolutely trustworthy was seated at their heart, working through their hands, predominating in all their being. And we are now men, and must accept in the highest mind the same transcendent destiny; and not minors and invalids in a protected corner, not cowards fleeing before a revolution, but guides, redeemers, and benefactors, obeying the Almighty effort, and advancing on Chaos and the Dark.
