Medical Officer Pay

Every active duty service member receives:
1. Basic pay based on rank and time in service
2. Basic allowance for subsistence (BAS), not taxable
3. Basic allowance for housing (BAH), not taxable
4. Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) - Only for service members who live overseas or in a housing area where the "non-housing cost of living for that area exceeds the threshold percentage"
Military physicians are eligible for special medical bonuses:
1. Variable Special Pay (VSP) - Monthly bonus received by all physicians including interns and residents
2. Additional Special Pay (ASP) - Annual bonus received by physicians who have graduated a residency or interns who are serving a GMO tour
3. Incentive Special Pay - This pay is an annual bonus only for physicians who have graduated a residency. ISP for primary care providers is around 10k and can be as high as 30k for surgeons.
4. Board Certification Pay (BCP) - Monthly bonus reserved for physicians who are board certified in their medical specialty.
5. Multi-year Special Pay (MSP) - This annual bonus is for doctors who sign a contract for additional years of obligated service. The longer the contract the higher the bonus is. The contracts range from 2 to 4 years.
Residents and interns receive rank pay, subsistence allowance, housing allowance and the Variable Special Pay Bonus. Military residents and interns are paid significantly higher than their civilian counter parts.
GMOs are physicians who have graduated internship and are serving as general physicians. They receive all the above pays but also the Additional Special Pay Bonus ($15k at the time of this writing)
