MD/PhD degree:
Commonly used as a B-track, plan B to avoid or wave off cost of med school....or a secondary backup option if med school doesnt come through.
Many MD doctors can do any research they want as a copartner with a phd, or as a cowriter.
After MDs can easily negotiate a PHD course of study of their own with any univ as an add on.
Downside: PhDs cant practice medicine as a clinician, but MDs can, a BIG difference in roles, jobs and money.
Phd academic life is embroilled in grants quota pressure to win alot of money for an academic/university lab. PHDs loose their will to research or loose their lab because they drop below their grant level quotas. Research grant jury committees can be very political and biased, old boys club mentality.
Few women choose the academic research field because of children factor, hiring.managers shy away from hiring women cuz of them eventually.bailing out on research and leave team hanging(as a possible option)...super, supportive partner necessary.
A prof I know..PhD..had her own lab at VA hospital(major city)....ran out of lab money, liked teaching , worked as an adjunct, then transitioned to become a full time prof.
